Rockwell hardness n. a number indicative of the degree of relative hardness of materials, determined by measuring the depth of the impression made by a steel or diamond penetrator pressed into the surface of the material being tested. There are a number of Rockwell hardness tests and scales, using various combinations of loads and penetrators; the load and penetrator combination must always be specified when stating a Rockwell hardness number.

Rocky Mountain spotted f. an acute, infectious, sometimes fatal disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, usually transmitted by the bite of an infected ixodid tick, usually Dermacentor andersoni (wood tick) or D. variabilis (dog tick); it occurs only in North and South America. It is characterized by sudden onset; chills; fever lasting 2 to 3 weeks; a cutaneous rash that generally appears between the second and sixth days and spreads from the distal extremities to the proximal extremities, trunk, and face; myalgias; severe headache; and prostration. Called also black, blue, or pinta f., blue disease, and tick-borne typhus. It is also known by many local names including Brazilian spotted, Choix, Colombian tick, or Tobia f., and São Paulo typhus.
